Petali--
Tenuta Gorghi Tondi is based in Mazara del Vallo, in southwestern Sicily, with a family story shaped by four generations of women. From great-grandmother Dora to Annamaria and Clara Sala, who lead the estate today, a deep connection with this distinctive landscape has remained a constant. In 2000, Michele Sala and his wife Doretta established the winery, naming it after the “gorghi”, the natural pools of the nearby Lago Preola and Gorghi Tondi Nature Reserve.
The vineyards lie between the protected reserve and the Mediterranean Sea, in an environment where biodiversity, predominantly calcareous and sandy soils, constant ventilation and maritime influence shape what the estate calls “sea viticulture”. Gorghi Tondi organically farms 115 hectares, focusing on Sicilian grape varieties and particularly on Grillo, a cornerstone of its winemaking identity and research.
A Grillo vineyard just metres from the Mediterranean also gives rise to Grillodoro, a late-harvest wine produced only in vintages when Botrytis cinerea develops naturally: a rare occurrence in Sicily.
Today, Gorghi Tondi brings together wine culture, research, sustainability and hospitality, expressing a contemporary vision of western Sicily firmly rooted in the place where its wines are born.
