In Desana , in Piemonte , towards the future without forgetting the past, Tenuta Castello mainly cultivates organic rice in soils fertilized with organic fertilizer produced by its cattle and uses 55% of energy from renewable sources.
Since 1833, Tenuta Castello farm, a family business backed by centuries of history , has always had its headquarters within the Castle of Desana, very close to Vercelli. Tenuta Castello covers an area of 400 hectares, of which 120 are cultivated with rice of the best varieties, mainly with organic production, and the remaining hectares with spelt,corn and poplars. The family cares for the whole production chain, ensuring the varietal purity of the rice they grow.
From land preparation to harvesting, from stone-mill processing to packaging, Tenuta Castello guarantees the certainty of a controlled product at all stages of processing. Respecting the product's genuinity and the environment, the rice is still traditionally worked in a rice mill with machinery from the early ' 900.

The CARNAROLI CLASSICO ( Carnaroli 100%) which grows from rice seed certified by Ente Nazionale Sementi Elette and is dried at low temperature with a light stone husking to keep the quality of the grain unchanged. Slightly darker but with a lower glycemic index , better cooking resistance and above all more taste and more nutritional elements.
The ORGANIC CULTIVATION 1) with the breeding of cows for the production of organic manure
2) with maximum attention to limiting carbon emissions in the air , thanks to the low ventilation of the land and to the use of light plowing ( light use of harrow ) , as well as maintaining green crops in autumn/winter to generate oxygen for photosynthesis
3) with green mulching: the grass leaves of ryegrass/vetch/clover , sown in Autumn , are crushed with a roller as to make a carpet (mulch) that ferments and prevents the birth of weeds. Now we are ready to sow organic rice
